Have you ever been to a play and noticed that behind the amazing actors, there is a group of people moving sets around between scenes? Well, that’s the backstage crew! While they don’t perform or sing most of the time, they are just as important.
For weeks before the cast begins dress rehearsals, the crew is responsible for designing and building set pieces, and backgrounds, and making props. Once the dress rehearsals start, the crew moves to work backstage. But on top of all that they are also in charge of lighting and sound. Those two jobs you need to be trained for are probably the most complex to learn and require good timing and your full attention.
The week before the performance nights is called “tech week”. That is when dress rehearsals start. The crew and performers do full run-throughs of the play, making everything go smoothly. During those rehearsals, you stay at the school pretty late and often have dinner there, but the long nights of working are incredibly worth it. If there are any downsides, I’d say it’s not being able to see all your hard work.
